The grinding floor of the South Mill at Cheddleton. The base of the grinding pan is lined with chert 'pavers'. The paddles are driven round by the waterwheel, acting through a set of gears to translate horizontal motion into vertical rotation. A selection of paver stones can be seen on the floor, and a wagon of flint is suspended over the pan.
