This gatehouse the only remains of the castle built by Richard de Abberbury. Later sold to Thomas Chaucer - son of the poet, then confiscated by the Crown in 1503. It suffered in the Civil War with cannon damage repaired with the red brickwork visible in one of the gatehouse towers.
