Thought to date from 14th Century, the building was used as a lookout for Newquay pilchard fisherman during 19th Century. The 'Huer' looked for coloration in the sea indicating a pilchard shoal, then blew a horn or waved to direct the boats to its location. The coat of arms was added in 1897.
