Covering
the East Riding, North, South and West Yorkshire, and North & North
East Lincolnshire. As the largest British county, Yorkshire is big on
scenery, rich in history, and has vast open spaces ripe for exploring. Miles
of exposed moorland and sheltered dales are punctuated only by the skilfully
constructed dry-stone walls that feature prominently throughout the region.
The stunning natural beauty of the area, which includes gorges, ravines,
waterfalls, and mountains, contrasts vividly with the bleak wilderness of
the moors. Delightful market towns, bustling coastal resorts, little fishing
ports, ancient cities, many evocative ruins, and modern leisure facilities
can all be found in this fascinating region. But this idyllic haven of space
and spectacular landscapes has had its fair share of conflict over the centuries.
Vikings, Saxons and Romans settled here, and then the Normans arrived. During
the 11th century they devasted the Vale of York, and an air of uneasiness
remained for the next six hundred years. The Wars of the Roses raged through
the 15th century, the Pilgrimage of Grace took place in the 16th century,
and the 17th century saw more death and destruction during the Civil War.
Today, even the the giant mills of the cloth industry, and the steel plants,
stand in a resigned peace. |
